Dispensary marketing ideas that stay inside the rules

Most dispensary marketing advice ignores the part that matters: half of it is not allowed. These seven ideas work inside the restrictions most states impose, because they reach people who already came in rather than advertising to people who did not.

1. Make the exit bag a channel

The bag, the receipt and the budtender card are owned media behind your own door. A QR code there reaches a 21+ customer who already chose you. Put something worth scanning behind it.

2. A game, with the gate on the door

A one-minute browser game starring your mascot, behind a 21+ age affirmation, with your state's warnings and no health claims. Clear a level, earn a reward structured to fit your state: a percentage code where discounts are allowed, points or tier status where they are not. Lion Run, the first game we built, was for a three-store Minnesota retailer.

3. Budtender picks, by name

People trust a person. A rotating "Jordan's pick" card at the counter, with the budtender's own two sentences, moves product and builds the relationship that keeps people coming back.

4. Education as content

Terpenes, dosing basics, how to read a label. Educational content is permitted in most states where promotional content is not, and it is what new customers actually search for.

5. The loyalty ladder

Where discounts are restricted, tiers are not. Bronze, silver, gold with early access, a dedicated line or a reserved drop. Tie tier progress to visits, and to levels in the game if you run one.

6. Community, carefully

Sponsorships and events have rules; neighborhood presence mostly does not. Be the store that shows up for the block cleanup and the street festival with branded water and no product.

7. Measure redemptions, not followers

Social reach is restricted and unreliable for cannabis. Count what you can control: scans, redemptions, repeat-visit rate. Those are the numbers that tell you whether marketing worked.

A note on compliance

Rules differ by state and change often. Everything above should go past your compliance officer or counsel before launch; we build that review into every dispensary game.
